Publishing Options by Amy Landa

After literally spending years to fine-tune a manuscript for publication, I was so eager to hold an actual book in my hands that I knew the lengthy and rejection-riddled road to traditional publishing was not for me. The more I learned about the level of marketing effort required by me to promote my book, the less I wanted to share the book’s profits with self-publishing outfits that did little more than print my book and list it on their website. Another reason why I rejected the idea of working through a self-publishing service is that I wanted big bookstores to carry my title. Thus, I found my way to non-traditional publishing.

Through a “print-to-promote” program offered by a non-traditional publisher in Scottsdale, I was able to affordably get real live books in my hands. Bowker registration, ISBN’s and distribution through major distributors were also available through the program. No contracts were signed. No profits or royalties were split. I simply purchased the services that I wanted. These non-traditional options were perfect for my entrepreneurial personality and for the goals I had set for the book.

Author-assisted publishing is a viable option for non-traditionalists who are not interested in participating in the business side of publishing. Authors who want to be represented by a publisher in the marketplace and are willing to participate financially in the initial production costs of their book enjoy higher royalties due to the decreased financial risk of the publisher.

My background is in accounting, a far cry from marketing and promotions, so the money I saved by my non-traditional publishing choice helped bolster my budget where I really needed the help!
